Plumper Way Viewpoint: A short trail at the end of Plumper Way leads to a two-person wooden bench overlooking the confluence of Plumper Sound, Swanson Channel, and Haro Strait; it’s a good place to spot otters and seals swimming or feeding near shore, and orcas and freighters transiting the sound or channel. The distant land mass is Stuart Island in the U.S. San Juan Islands (052226).

Worth knowing: 1) I no longer ride from the Otter Bay Ferry Terminal to the Driftwood Centre, or between the Driftwood Centre and the turnoff to South Pender: there’s too much motor-vehicle traffic. Mix this with a marked increase in cyclists using this 7 km stretch of narrow, winding, shoulderless road, and you have a recipe for conflict. Two-wheel riders are always on the losing end. So, I transport my bike by car to the start of my bike route of choice, ride in the early morning, and restrict my outing to one of these three routes, which are clear of North Pender’s main drag. 2) Wherever possible, and especially at blind corners or the crest of a hill, I pull off the road into the start of a driveway so motor vehicles can pass me (for my protection and theirs). 3) New in 2026, the Schooner Way School Trail, a 1.4-kilometre-long pedestrian/bike trail from the Danny Martin Ball Park in Magic Lake to the Pender Islands Elementary Secondary School and Pender Island Health Centre, has made for a safer bike route from Magic Lake Estates to Medicine Beach Nature Sanctuary and South Pender Island.
