MAYNE ISLAND’S BEST

The Belle Chain Islets route (from Bennett Bay Beach) is one of many possibilities from Mayne Island. Read about other options in the Mayne Island/AND IF YOU PADDLE section of hiker/paddler Charles Kahn’s book Hiking the Gulf Islands of British Columbia: 4th EditionSGI OUTSIDE will add Circumnavigating Mayne Island when RP revisits this water journey in 2026.

Belle Chain Islets (GINPR) • Last paddled by RP: March 2026 • Circle Tour • EXPERIENCED MAP  Launch/Landing Coordinates (Bennett Bay Beach): 48.84630, -123.25095 • Tide Station: Miners Bay • 9 km (approx. 4.9 nmi) round trip • 2 hrs • Parking on lane off Wilks Road or on Wilks Road shoulder • Route: Follow the Bennett Bay shoreline to Campbell Point then cross to Georgeson Island (choose the side based on wind and current direction/strength); at the southeast end of Georgeson Island, aim for the islet furthest offshore of Samuel Island’s north side; pass the sea lion haulout and around the far end of the third islet, often a roost for Bald eagles; after a peek at the eagles and the sea lions again, angle to the next closest islet to Samuel; return to Georgeson Island and Bennett Bay • Services along route: None • Birders: 140 species at Bennett Bay since 2018 (eBird) • Highlights/Notes: Greeting barks and growls from the male Steller and California sea lions hauled out on the second of the Belle Chain Islets and the stench of cormorant and gull guano on the permanently stained rock ledge; keep a safe distance (100 metres) from shore as the sea lions will take chase if they feel encroached upon; Bald eagles and Pacific Harbour seals are a common sight; GINPR prohibited activity: Belle Chain Islets and surroundings area • Best time of year: Anytime, but the sea lions are only present from fall through spring.
